In this instance I definitely needed a new power supply (see photo of the scorch mark on the MCL Expander board). This area was extremely hot when the old power supply was connected. I’m still trying to work through a problem of no LED lights and sound on the MCL boxes that are now attached a “certified-working” used MCL Expander box that just arrived from the UK (using the correct DC polarity from a new power adapter that was installed this morning).
Thank you, Madskp for confirming the center pin has negative polarity. I located the original 12-volt power supply that was used with this system for the last 25+ years. A multimeter reading does indeed show negative polarity (the DC output voltage on the old unit is now indicating 19-volts, hence the need for the new 12v DC power supply).
Good observation, I incorrectly said there are “four MCL 2A Type 2046 boxes connected to 7 speaker pairs.” Actually, there are seven MCL 2A Type 2046 boxes connected to 7 speaker pairs.
Thank you, Madskp for pointing me in the right direction. I have four MCL 2A Type 2046 boxes connected to 7 speaker pairs. I just ordered a used MCL 2 Expander Type 2007 from Quality Dream Audio in the UK. Hopefully it will arrive in working order. I’ll be on the lookout for one or two more of these devices as backups. It’s good to know that the BM5500 can be connected with a Beolink Converter 1611 or 1612. I’ll research these products in the event that I have to use this alternative solution. Again, thank you for taking time to help me.
Thank you for responding to my question, Guy and Madskp. I may have gotten lucky. I found a new-old-stock MCL 2 Expander on eBay.
New questions come to mind (regarding newer MasterLink products) after researching the MCL2 expander and refreshing my memory on the X-tra speaker kit. I’ll post a new question in the forum for the benefit of other members. Thank you again for your help.
