Hi Guys, thanks! I have gone thru the check list and commented below.
I went thru the apple checklist:
“Make sure your TV supports HDR10, HDR10+ or Dolby Vision” my LG G2 does support it
For HDR to work from external devices, the HDMI Deep Color option usually has to be set
to ‘4k’ from the ‘HDMI I have rechecked and for HDMI this is set to 4KCheck your HDMI cable
If there’s an issue with your HDMI cable, you may see a message on your TV that says your HDMI cable may be having trouble maintaining a stable connection. If your Apple TV 4K is connected to a 4K compatible TV, you can run a two-minute test to check your HDMI cable connection. Go to Settings > Video and Audio and select Check HDMI Connection.I did not find the option for check HDMI connection. I did change it from YbYGYr to RGB High. This reflected in the OLED77G2 shifting to HDR from SDR. In the apple resolution options I switched to 1080p HDR so now getting better than 1080p SDR.
Check HDMI Cable for DolbyVision certified
there isn’t enough length to go thru the whole cable coming from the walll but in the 0.75m or so I saw there is nothing written.
the title reads “AppleTV 4K dolby vision issues” ; are you seeing something different?
Hi Sandy,
sorry if it getting confusing:
I’m slightly confused, as you say the ATV is connected to the LG, but elsewhere you mention the HDI balun to bring things from the rack to the TV/Theatre.
There is an AppleTV is in the rack. It connected to the LG via the HDI Balun bringing the feed from the rack to HDMI 1 on the LG. Conclusively, the AppleTV connects to the LG using the HDI Balun, and the former is in a rack which is 10 metres away.
So does the Apple TV physically sit next to / close to the LG / Theatre?
Answered above
Forgive me if I am missing something.
I hope this clarifies.
thanks for your reply.
to your first post:
The AppleTV is connected to the LG and no settings have been changed. Further I have as mentioned above experimented with using HDMI 3, but it still doesn’t show DolbyVision. When a feed comes with HDR the LG automatically selects the right picture mode such as when playing the same video using the built in ATV app in the LG.
to your second:
“Also, commercial HDR or Dolby Vision broadcasts from streaming services are all in 4:2:0 chroma subsampling. 4:4:4 is only from feeds from computers and gaming consoles.”
I am not using commercial or dolby vision broadcasts. As mentioned I am using Avatar the way of the water, purchased using appleTV, and playing it back on A) the LG AppleTV built in app and b) on the Apple TV which supports DolbyVision.
best.
sorry for the confusion. I’ll simplify below.
I have a BST +LG77″ G2 + BL18 + 19
I have an ATV box connected by way of a Balun kit to the LG.
I can play Apple purchased movies both thru the LG’s built-in AppleTV app and also thru the AppleTV box which is connected by way of a Balun kit.
In the former I am getting DolbyVision. In the latter using the ATV Box I am not getting Dolby Vision.
HI Sandy,
The ATV is connected using HDMi to your matrix. The matrix outputs via network cable (CAT 6 to Cat 7 network cable) across your room (assuming this is hidden) to the LG/Theatre. At the LG/Theatre end, the network cable goes into the HDMI Balun, and HDMI comes out of the Balun and goes into the LG.
this is correct.
And if you have the Neo Pro 4*4, it is not DV capable.
So that is why you are not getting DV “from your Apple TV’. Its the Neo matrix in the middle that is preventing it.
It sounds like your matrix / rack setup was done a while ago by one installer, and now you are using a different installer? Not every installer is familiar with the nuances on different matrices. The Atlona 4*4 in recent years has been DV (i.e full UHD) capable, but the Neo Pro 4*4, whilst almost indentical, does not pass through Dolby Vision.
the two devices are NOT connected in any way. the 4*4 works with another Apple TV and serves other rooms. (I have mentioned this earlier in the page).
Thanks for replying MM.
The extender kit (HDR Balun kit) which the “Certified B&O Installation Partner” installed connects my AppleTV in the rack to the LG 77″ G2 in the living room.
The B&O partner rates are as below:
Call Out Charge (Weekdays
£110.00
Call Out Charge (Weekend/Bank Holiday)
£180.00
Subsequent Hourly Rate (Weekdays)
£70.00
Subsequent Hourly Rate (Weekend/Bank Holiday)
£95.00
Engineering Day Rate
£400.00
Engineering Day Rate (Weekends and Bank Holidays)
£600.00The monthly plan starts at GBP 22 for the rack rate, GBP 45 for a 10% discount, GBP 65 for a 30% discount not including VAT and GBP 95 for unlimited calls (not including VAT). *The above rates apply to business hours (prime shift) An uplift of 75% is applicable to 24x7x365 cover. With each of these plans come respective response levels etc.
to be honest when I was buying the system I thought it would be a simple B&O buy, install and forget about it. I’ve had different B&O stuff over the years and while nothing as elaborate as this never in my wildest dreams did I think I would have to pay someone once the install is done.
To top it off I have been travelling and only been in the uk for 3 weeks since it was installed.
Hi Sandy,
“HDR Balun kit to send video to screen from rack over CAT6” is what has been installed by the “Certified B&O Installation Partner”.
I could take the rack out to find out exactly what has been used.
I had another person earlier install a Neo Matrix 4×4 Pro which ends in other rooms in the house. I don’t really use this much though but it’s on the rack.
Hi Simon and Sandy,
thank you so much for your help. I worked with a recommended official installer of a store which sold me the system. Given the installation of an electric lift and custom panel for the sound theatre it was an extensive install. They wired the HDMI cable directly from the appletv into the LG. It’s barely been six months and they are suggesting I purchase a service agreement to come and trouble shoot.
This is pretty annoying to say the least…
Thanks Simon.
I too have a motorised bracket 🙂 I believe the installer may have mistakenly plugged into the AppleTV into the LG instead of the Theatre. They installed a HDR Balun kit to send video to the screen from my rack which is on the other side of the room.
I switched to another HDMI port but no luck. Still not getting DolbyVision thru the AppleTV. The AppleTV I have is the A2169 which supports HDMI 2.1 upto 4k60 HDR10 and Dolby Vision.
Do you think this is a cable issue as the AppleTV should give DolbyVision directly to the TV if connected directly shouldn’t it?
Hi Normann,
I’m looking to get Hi-Res Audio (higher than 48kHz) using the BST. I don’t want to use 2 channel on the beolab 18’s as they are setup as rear speakers. Thus the only option is to use the BST.
The AppleTV is limited to 48kHz so running Roon on it is nice but limited in quality. Roon uses AirPlay to stream so that further reduces the quality of what may likely be a 192kHz file.
If I were able to connect a high-res network streamer then I was hoping to be able to send a higher-res audio file than otherwise possible using AppleTV or using Deezer.
My speakers start and shut-down with the BST.
Hi Normann,
thanks a really interesting idea. I’m sure given the !&o limitations the Bluetooth codecs being use are not of the highest standards specially after reading how they downgraded the WISA capabilities.
got me thinking about using the ifi go blu (https://ifi-audio.com/products/go-blu/) which I use to send high-res from the phone to the headphones.l when moving around.
It’s Bluetooth specs are “
Qualcomm’s aptX Adaptive and aptX HD, Sony’s LDAC and HWA’s LHDC, regular aptX and aptX Low Latency, AAC (Apple iOS devices) and SBC (the ‘plain vanilla’ Bluetooth codec).
Of the 24-bit-capable codecs, aptX Adaptive and aptX HD support up to 48kHz, while LDAC and LHDC reach 96kHz.”
one could plug this into the line out jack on the BST. And stream from a mobile phone or the dedicated network streamer you mention also from ifi.
any thoughts on how this would sound & work? That it’s a DAC, could pose a problem. Is there a mode in the theatre to just send out stereo direct?
Wish there was an easy way to charge this too.l as I have no extra power socket where my system is set up. Possible to use the usb c socket on the b&o to charge this? Maybe a device which can break out the usbc into usb c and a line in? @steve?
hi Sandyb, treackbeo,
thanks for your feedback. earlier above treckbeo mentioned that a conversion from digital to analogue back to digital and analogue ge an adverse impact given i am using a BST.
if i were to use a room ready network streamer would this problem persist?
the goal would be to use roon as the control and potentially other services to stream music and get out of having to use the lg apps.
my bl18 and 19 are hardwired. does this change anything in my setup? however they are placed as rear speakers.
i currently use roon with network streamers with other non b&O loudspeakers in other rooms in the home and also on with a headphone dap using services which offer 192kHz.
Hi Syrianos82,
Thank you for the reply. that is quite helpful.
I will try out the apps on LG. When playing thru Tidal, I presume I will only get 44.1 unless the BST does full MQA uncoding (?). anyone know the specs of it’s DAC?
Has anyone used the LG apps to get 192kHz?
@trackBeo, I believe the AppleTV limits audio to 24-bit/48KHz.I wish B&O just supported some of the more high-res streaming apps than ones limited to decent quality MP3’s. Deezer is better than Spotify for sure but a far cry from Qobuz.
looking on the web I found, HALL AUDIO WiFi Streamer with HDMI ARC -has anyone tried this? looks to be made for B&O users in mind.
possible solution: This Denon – DNP-2000NE – came out earlier in the week. It has an HDMI ARC out and is a network streamer and Roon Ready. If I were to connect this directly to the BST using HDMI would it solve the problem? I would have to then buy a HDMI switch or figure out how to use the Pulse-Eight to do this.
hi,
I have read most of the posts but not been able to find a complete answer to a question on streaming high res audio to my b&o system.
I am using a b&O sound theatre with the beolab 18 (For rear) & 19 connected to a 77” G2. The screen and BST are mounted on a motorized future automation mount negating the option of using a line out with a wire to my ipad (or other).
I have an apple tv connected to it using a balun hdmi extender which terminates in my networking cabinet.
I am a new to my current b&o setup but not high res audio and would like to see if i can get the full benefit of using qobuz, amazon unlimited and tidal (does b&O handle mqa?). on my bang and olufsen system. The apple tv is limited in the high-res output and I am interested in feeding a 24bit/192khz signal or if not that then a 24/96
1. Is this possible and how do I do it?
2. Does the BST have a built in DAC ?
3. Can i use a DAP or should I use a network streamer?
4. would a Core be of any help in sending a high res audio signal?
5. can i substitute the apple tv for another device which can stream hi-res audio at levels better than apple tv?
6. if anyone has successfully done got high res music to a system like mine how did it sound?
It’s been a few days i’d poring thru the forum pages. thanks so much for your help. please feel free to add more information than asked for as i’m a bit lost on this.
Hi,
I hope you have had some success in resolving the issues from last May. I can only comment on 2 and 4.
Should I use optical? Will the core control the volume if I do?
if using optical the signal goes digitally unprocessed and is converted to analogue at the very end which is ideal. so in most cases using SPDIF and Coaxial is the only way to get a digital signal in complete purity over. When connecting via a RCA/line-out one would be converting a digital signal to analogue which I gather the core would then convert to digital and it would be converted again at the end. Best to go optical.
This actually leads to my question which is that the Core is limited in it’s Optical output to 96 kHz.
Is this more likely a Deezer/source issue? if so, any advice on how to get a better quality source to the core, can I keep multiroom if I combine something with the optical in?
The best streaming apps for Quality of Signal are Qobuz, Tidal and Amazon Music. It can depend on a lot of factors but at the end of the day these 3 have the most highest def libraries out there. With Tidal you would need to be concerned about MQA unfolding hence my goto is Amazon Music.
I can’t comment on multiroom as I havent’ used it but I do not see an issue.
If so, any advice on how to get a better quality source to the core, can I keep multiroom if I combine something with the optical in?
I am trying to solve for this problem in the following setup in my living room:
Sound Theatre, Beolab 18’s, Beolab 19, AppleTV, LG77″
I am running Tidal and Quboz on Roon. Amazon Music HD (my fav). (& Apple Music, Spotify and Pandora)
In other rooms in the home I am running Blusound which is great in that it supports all the music services I use and provides an output of 192 kHz. I also have a couple of DAP’s specifically for my headphones (Focal Stellia, HifiMan XS, Meze Elite’s) and really value having music available at 192 kHz and sometimes use DSD.
I would like to play at 192kHz on my B&O system.
Apple TV which is my primary music source to the sound theatre is limited to 16-bit 48 kHz
B&O says the Core is able to process “standard streams up to 192 kHz” and the “optical is limited to 96 kHz”. With no streaming service that B&O integrates with offering no higher than 48Khz h0w can I get to the 192 kHz?
With all that being said I think the best is to go with a bluesound node or other DAP as you will be able to get 96 kHZ into your B&O. once you have that you can listen to something on deezer and compare the same album to one on amazon music and see a significant difference.
Bear in mind that optical cables are impacted by quality and would suggest buying something more decent than what comes free in the box.
Would be great to hear how it went.
