Hello…. I’m hoping someone can point me in the right direction, or give me some guidance.
I have a Beogram 4000 Turntable from the early 70s, I would like to find out if it is still functioning correctly. Currently I don’t have a cartridge, this leaves me unable to make the most basic of tests. One of the pickup arms should have a red led illuminated, it doesn’t, I’m unsure of its significance. The deck spins up and the arms appear to be working correctly when powered up.
Also, are there any alternatives to the B&O 4000 pickup needle, as I’m sure most of you know, they are horribly expensive
I live just outside London.
Big thanks,
BB

How far is Leeds from you?
Why don’t you bring it to Multicare and have them advise you?

Here’s a video of how the restore 4000c turntables:

9 November 2023 at 09:15 #50291Hi Derek …
Big thanks or writing back, very much appreciated.
My goodness do those guys know what they are doing, what I’d call proper Electronic Engineers, so knowledgable, if only they were closer, the video is a great example of their work. I’m around 4 and a bit hrs drive from Leeds, so it’s a bit of a hike for me, 8hrs plus drive in a day, ummm. I think what I’ll do is have a chat with them over the phone and see where that takes me. They’d definately be my first choice.
As I’m writing, I’m thinking I could possibly go up by train from London, tie the deck to a slightly smaller than average sack barrow, if that makes sense. The train journey is @ 2.5 to 3hrs from Kings X. Probably post and really good packing would be a better option.
Thank you again, I’ll keep you posted.
Best wishes.. BB
ps… I did find a company down in Eastbourne, called Quality Dream Audio, but I don’t know anything about them.
10 November 2023 at 02:41 #50294If you’re near London then you aren’t far from Tim Jarman, who is in Farnborough, Hampshire and he would give the deck a thorough once-over for you.
You can contact him through his website here: https://beocentral.com/contact
11 November 2023 at 01:21 #50295From your pic I can see the tone arm connector which accepts the cartridge is ruined…..this can be replaced with a lazer printed component available from Rudi the Beolover. This is a quite involved process requiring some very tricky soldering and also some time to achieve, the absence of light from the detector arm may be nothing more than a burned out lamp, also requiring some soldering skills…..these are not tasks to be undertaken by anyone unsure of said abilities…..and if one can find a repair shop willing to take it on, not many will due to the time consuming process, they will charge you a fortune. I have a B&O shop close to me who advised me they charge £150 just to look at a BG4000…..needless to say any repairs on my kit is carried out by myself ;¬)
Tim Jarman is well respected in this forum, though I have never met him, I’m sure he would be more than capable of giving you some guidance.
