I have the Theater which is doing a great job as a center speaker for movies. Few things this lacks is the wider width of stereo image and maybe some treble range.

I am considering adding BL28 or BL50 as for the stereo setup. I have leaned towards the 50s because I would want this setup to last more than 10 years (I do not want to feel the need to upgrade in a few years.) But i am also worried that i might be overkilling it with the 50s.

My usage would be 50:50 music/movie. When I heard the 28s in the dealership, it sounded a little more balanced towards bass (i think the Theater sounds that way as well). From a short listening session, I found the 50s to be more natural and well-balanced.

My living room is about 7m x 7m. I like the designs of both speakers but i feel like the 50s would be of too much presence in my living room bc of its size.

I am also thinking about adding the new BL8s as rears after a few years for home theater setup.

What would you recommend? Thank you in advance.

That is a hard question to answer. I had 50s connected to my BV7. I traded them in on 28s which are now connected to a Theatre. I found the 50s a bit large for my space visually. I also felt that I was not getting the full benefit of them given my space. They were against a wall with side walls nearby each. I much prefer how the 28s look in my room. Only at louder volumes than I ever listen to do I ever wonder if I should have kept the 50s. I have 9s as rears.

          Thank you for the reply!

That’s exactly how I feel about placing the 50s in my living room as well. It’s not a small living room but the 50s will be the most eyecatching objects in the house. I was just worried that if I get the 28s I will always be wanting the 50s down the road. With B&O product prices going up every 9 month or so, I thought I might as well just go for the 50s straight as today’s price is probably the cheapest to buy the 50s haha..

So from your experience, going from 50s to 28s didnt feel too much of a downgrade within modest volume ranges? With a first baby girl due in August, I do not think I will be blasting my speakers any time soon… So maybe not worth to spend twice to go for 50s?

And also how much difference does adding the 28/50 to your beo TV system have?

            I have 50s (connected to a Theatre) in a modest sized room – 6m by 4.75m.

Depending on what else you need to place in that room, 50s can take up floor space and mean compromises elsewhere. I’m willing to make that compromise, but its just me (and the dog), so I can live with their presence.

Personally, and I used to have just 18s / 3s as my attached speakers, if I were primarily a TV / Movie watcher then 50s are a bit overkill, fabulous though they sound.

But I wanted something (i.e. 50s) that were much more satisfying for music listening – I’m just addicted to a huge soundstage and very meaty presentation. I’d say the 28s do a good approximation, though the bass leanings were always not to my taste – but value wise, they’re sensible vs the 50s.

So I’d go 28s, unless (and you’d need to think carefully about this) you are sufficiently fussy about music that one day you’ll end up buying 50s. In which case, 50s are you answer.

Had a typo in my reply. 9s as rears, not 20s. I did not feel like it was much of downgrade, if any at all, in my room. It reminded me of years ago when I had the 9s in front. Dealer brought me a pair of 5s to try. I was allowed to try them for a few weeks. I sent them back as my conclusion was that while the 5s sounded “different” than the 9s, I could not say that in my house, to my ears, the 5s sounded “better”. I would describe 28s/50s the same.
The 50s definitely have tighter more precise bass at loud levels. But whenever I start to think I should have kept the 50s, I realize how much better the 28s look in my room, remember how I always wondered/worried if close side walls and furniture were diminishing the benefit of the 50s side facing drivers, and think that perhaps the biggest reason I might miss them is just the ego factor, of saying I have 50s. I have really never thought about the difference adding the 28s to the Theatre creates as I had the 28s before the Theatre.

If I am watching generic TV, or YouTubes, I only have the Theatre on. For movies and other things with good sound, I have the added speakers on. For music, sometimes I just turn the 28s on. Other times I have the Theatre driving the 28s with 9s set as subwoofers.
