Hi Sandyb, Yes, that is correct. However, it is worth noting that the B&O website and spec sheet are incorrect as the Theatre has 4 wired Powerlink ports (RJ45), not 8 as quoted. Kind regards, Steve.

Isn’t how you interpreter it? Sure there are 4 Powerlink ports (same as Eclipe, Harmony, BV11, BV14, Avant, etc). But 1 port holds 2 Powerlink connections.

So 2 connections per ports times 4 ports make 8x Powerlink.

        Hi Beoworlders,

If you are considering buying the new Beosound Theatre, please can you let me know which audio products you would want to use it with?

        Query

This could be an existing Beosound music system, a Beogram turntable, non-B&O speakers, or something completely different… I will then cover how to make all the connections in my next YouTube video.

        Kind regards, Steve.

Could the new Theatre be setup as centre and ceiling alone so you can add fronts?
The Beolab 12 range look to be quite the match concerning looks.

Beosound Theatre + TV on top will replace my BeoVision 8 and a Technisat receiver.

            Additional speakers:

For me BeoLab 9 BeoLab 4000 or 6000 or 3 (all existing). BeoLab 9 in front and another pair rear. I am still considering a 55″ or 65″ TV. Looking into a very special crystal ball I think the price tag for a full mounted system is approximately something like a BeoVision Eclipse. For Sound only the BeoSound 5 and 9000 will continue working. For good pictures a new apple TV and an existing Bluray-Player (replaced by 4k?) will do their job.

PS: A small black box reserves my BeoLab 9 for BeoSound 5 or 9000, when one of them is switched on. Thanks to my dealer around the corner 300 m from my home.

In the last 8 years I have direct swapped from Avant 55 with motorised floor stand to an Eclipse Gen 1 with motorised arm bracket to an Eclipse Gen 2 using same motorised bracket. Connected to 3 pairs of BeoLab 17 and a BeoLab 19 all via WiSA. Only swapped so quickly as the Avant 55 screen went red and required a board change under warranty and the Eclipse Gen 1 screens showed ghosting where Sky News ticker banner is, and no LG C9 screen could be sourced.

I was planning to swap again to Eclipse Gen 3 to get the LG G2 screen, but may consider Theatre with 55” screen on the motorised arm bracket, but I don’t like the look, (don’t like the BeoLab 28 look either) and I have found a workable TrueImage Atmos via Apple TV outputting LPCM, or my Panasonic UB820 sending 7.1 over LPCM for UHD Discs.

Due to the limitations of my room the Soundcenter is always set to FL, CF, RF, and cannot add any speakers to take over the Front role.

1 of my BL17 is set to CH (above the Eclipse when it is powered off but just behind above the Eclipse when it travels out) and this really aids the Soundcenter centre channel.

              Other BL17 are set to:

SL, SR, LB or LSH, RB or RSH, depending on source.

I have tried many locations and settings for the BL19 and have returned to all 9 speakers filtered to the sub. I did for a long time run with only the speakers in the Soundcenter filtered to the sub and the BL17s unfiltered as I liked the extra base round the room… bit like how this will now be with the Theatre.

All the above being said, I have SMS the hero that is John at Manchester Bang Olufsen for an audition of a Theatre as soon as they have one in the store and setup to decide on whether now is the time to swap and to what.

                Thanks Peter and L1no,

Yes, these options will work. Beolab speakers are always best, as the Theatre has the sound signature (magnitude and phase response) of all Beolab speakers back to the original Pentas coded into it. This allows it to actually improve the sound of these speakers when they are plugged into the Theatre, by removing some of their design issues. This also shares the bass between all speakers according to their capability, which makes for a VERY powerful system once Beolab speakers are added.

Passive speakers (eg. Celestial, Palatial, or other brands) can be used along with a power amplifier, but you will lose this extra ability to share bass. I will cover all these options in the next video in a few days time.

                Kind regards, Steve.

                  @L1no

The BL12’s would work well there….and will look also very good ?

That will be an amazing upgrade – already looking forward to see pictures ?

Here is another video from Berlin:

You can skip the TCL add stuff, if you please.

                    N.B.
Towards the end you also can see some pics of the (mobile) app, that is used with the Theatre/LG combination.

app setup / settings looks decent enough to my eyes.

I wonder if that means there is no / very little B&O menu section that shows up / can be shown on the LG panel itself. (I’m not overly familiar with the Eclipse / Harmony generations to be honest).

Anyway, I dont especially mind doing most of the settings on the app.

not sure if that way will appeal to everyone though.

Guess we’ll find out in a few weeks.

                        Interesting question, indeed.

Looking forward to learn more about this!

I am not very keen on having to have my iPhone/iPad on the table, when using the combo for video.

But…..there is the physical remote as well – I guess all the basic stuff will be accessable via the Beoremote One.

The Beosound Theater checks off all of the boxes of what I was looking for in a replacement to the Beosystem 4 with the exception of how the Beoremote One control is implemented. It makes sense for the Beoremote One control to work via pairing with the LG screen IF control of smart tv apps are needed. However, if all of the control of the screen that the user needs is just to turn the screen on/off, it seems that the HDMI-CEC could control that and have all other control of the Beosound Theater be made through pairing the Theater directly with the Beoremote One. I’m finding B&O’s approach at having Beoremote One control reliant on an LG screen to be frustrating. As it stands now, if I want to use a Beoremote One with my Theater, I would need to replace my Samsung screen with one of the supported LG screens.

The soundbar can be used with any screen, so therefore there needs to be a app option. On a correct LG model, it is as we are use to.

I believe, reading between the lines, that B&O are trying to get some (perhaps the same?) level of integration with other brands (Sony and Samsung would achieve a lot). But that is not a very near term likelihood. Not sure the impact of the LG/B&O partnership on that project / aim, but regardless, I do believe that other brand integration is something they are aiming at.

OK, I’ve just come back from spending 40 minutes listening to the Theatre.

The B&O area in Selfridges, London has had a Theatre installed in their small listening room, with BL18s as front l/r, and BL28s as rears.

I posted the below on Discord:

Their set up is Theatre, BL 18s left / right front, and BL28s rears, all in the relatively small room that was shown in the photos yesterday……
We’ve all seen enough photos of the Theatre now, so in real life, nothing will change vis a vis your visual appreciation……if you liked it from the pictures, you’ll like it in real…..if you dont, then you probably wont…….they had the 65 Theatre on the floor stand…

Sound wise – i listened to the Theatre on its own (speaker group 1 in their setup), the Theatre in a group called TrueImage (Theatre, 18s fronts, 28s rears), and a 3rd speaker group Theatre + rear 28s (i.e no front left / right 18s)……

I wanted to gauge how good the Theatre was on its own – speak group 1 above….And its a pretty big sound, certainly more voluminous (width / depth / height) than the Eclipse. Was it mnd blowing on its own? Not to me, no. In simple terms, if i had a Harmony, its broadly similar, and i wouldnt feel compelled to change (on sound considerations)

I also wanted to gauge whether i (and this is just me) the Theatre alone would remove the need for front speakers (L/R) – and to me, no…i’d definitely still retain a dedicated set of front l/r speakers…..for context i like a massive wide soundstage, and my lounge is 3-4 times the size of the listening room.

Flicking between their group 1 (Theatre on its own) to group 2 (adding BL18s fronts) was reasonably different to me – there’s just quite a bit of extra width with dedicated fronts…..

Speaker group 3 – the B&O triangle lets call it – Theatre + 28s rears, was extremely good….oddly enough, i can see why they recommend this…..in this configuration, i didnt really miss the BL18s front l/r……..for a decent but not large livign room, i can see why that will be a very good setup…..

                                    Hi Sandyb,

Interesting comments. The thing that’s missing is the details of the configuration of the Theatre, which could have a noticeable impact on your experience.

I won’t get into the details of what, exactly, this means, since I’m working on a blog posting about it at the moment. I should be releasing it sometime this week, I hope… 🙂

Hi Geoff, I am looking forward to read your post. I sometimes refer my students to your articles on your blog, you really have some excellent material there!

I have two questions about the Theatre which are not obvious from the currently available information. Under the assumption that there is a ceiling that allows to bounce back the sound, can the Theatre use the upfiring speakers to emulate the effect of ceiling speakers? And similarly, if the rooms allow it, can it use the side firing speakers to widen the sound stage?

Hi there Geoff, yes in some respects the setup (having literally just been done on Thursday night at Selfridges) wasn’t ideal. In the sense that it was hard to find out to what extent the installers had set it up properly. Were all the various calibrations done, and done properly? One can only assume.

So my thoughts, caveated more fully on my Discord post, were initial impressions only. My usual dealer in London has a much more conducive listening environment, so I will revisit.

Initial impressions were pretty damn good though, and this is the product I’ve been waiting for. While I will certainly retain my BL50s as left / right fronts, and hence the following comment is less applicable to my setup, I did think the Theatre front / BL28s rears was indeed a very very good overall experience, and not one where the absence of dedicated front l/r’s was felt.

Anyway, my finger is poised to buy 2 Theatres – but I need Matrix integration to e implemented, as I (as some others still do) have a separate room / space with sources / HDMI matrix and cabling infrastructure to serve multiple BV’s in different rooms. (not your domain I strongly suspect, but mention it I must!)

Thanks, and look forward to the blog post.
