Installed the voltage regulator, bolted to the chassis, no additional heatsink required….gave her a spin and nothing is getting more than lukewarm….Martin recommends removing 2TR6 from the circuit board due to overheating causing the 6vdc supply to become unstable…..so I’m good with this, good test required and that should be that!P1016759

So ready to be returned to its home……been quite a journey, the success is largely due to Manfys inspiration and guidance regarding the voltage regulator and toroidal transformer.

Its good to know that a failed transformer isn’t the end of the road for a BG4000

            Hi,

Reading this with interest as looks like my transformer has failed, keeps blowing fuses on connecting power. Could you post a complete list of parts, and clarify what you did with GL90, on one post it looks like you connected it direct to mains and on another its disconnected.

            Thanks

Sorry for the late reply…..been a bit busy with work etc. The GL90 neon was connected directly to the incomming 230vac supply down stream of the fuses…..the supply needs to be connected through the reed relay contacts just as it is now (so the lamp only comes on when start is pressed) I think all the parts I used are documented in this post….but if you need any more info let me know

              Regards Craig

                Thanks Craig,

I had a problem not been able to find the regulator down here in New Zealand, spent ages trying to find an equivalents table but no luck. Eventually found BA06BC0T, don’t know what the difference is but specs look the same. Just wanted to double check on the neon, I never liked mains voltage on low voltage PBCB’s. When the transformer turns up in 6 days will get into it, it will be good to get it working again after 10 years.

Another thing that will help is if you look in the archive forum 2012-2022 you should be able to find the first part of this thread…….may make things clear for you

this is the final wiring with the load resistor (not shown) wired to the input of the regulator before the small capacitor 05ffpa0sulmmnltta0kg7jg7woeg9vni

Have you checked the transformer out fully?….measured the primary and secondary windings to be sure there’s an issue? tried disconnecting the secondary outputs and powering up?…..I did a lot of checks before I finally condemned the transformer due to them being impossible (mostly) to source….and bespoke toroidal transformers being so expensive to commission.

                        Hi Craig,

Found the original post and there is a lot in there to go through. Had pulled the transformer and get

                        Primary,

                        B – G 148k, B – Y 44.5ohms, G – Y 148k, R – W 45.6ohms, Y – W 146k, R – B 146k, R – G 98K

                        Secondary,

                        Y – Y 2.7, B – B 2.7, R – R 1.12k

Looks to me like there is a short between the 2 primary windings

                          Bernie

this pic shows the failed transformer wiring and measurements from my problematic transformer……the only problem with it turned out to be the low measurement on the 230v secondary output to the neon lamp, the rest of the measurements where the same as those on a fully working machine…..as can be seen the 0.89k should have been 1.3k

                            Craig,

Have checked transformer and looks like break down of insulation on primary windings. Been warming it in oven and have got reading of 146k up to 249k but that’s as far as it will go. Also found the B80 bridge rectifier was stuffed so have been waiting on components. Have installed new Toroidal transformer in chassis, I kept voltage selector but wired only to work on 240V setting. I have change all the electrolytic capacitors, so making progress slowly.
